The "Renegade" (now retitled "Maverick") copy program has a "GEOS toolkit"
built into it that will make archival backups of most GEOS programs, including
the new GEOS 128 v2.0. If you've upgraded, and if you own the copy program,
here is a way you can make a "personalized" backup of the boot disk. Note that
I'm providing the instructions for people who have *purchased* both programs;
in fact, I rather doubt that this method would work on a pirated copy of GEOS.
The "Renegade" manual says that you must make a copy of an *unaltered* GEOS 128
v2 disk. They say that you can't move files around, delete them, etc. This is
a wise precaution, given the Trojan Horses built into previous versions, which
would erase your boot files if you were using a "cracked" copy. However, there
is a way around this.
Use the "single file copier," as in the instructions, to make a non-bootable
copy of the GEOS master disk. But then, instead of running the parameter on it
right away, reset the computer and boot GEOS with your original disk instead.
Open the copy and rearrange the files to your liking. (I erased three pages of
un-usable printer drivers, copied over the double and quad strike drivers, and
put a copy of "convert 128" on the disk. Tragically, there is NO convert
program supplied with the program!! I then deleted all the empty pages.) Once
you have done that, exit GEOS, reload "Renegade," and THEN run the parameter on
your copy.

[Continued]
If you see the message that the parameter was successful, *immediately* put a
write-protect tab on your disk, before you even try to boot it.
If the parameter was indeed successful, you will be able to boot your new
personalized copy, and put your original disk away in a safe place. If you
want to change the boot disk in the future, I would advise making an entirely
new disk rather than trying to rearrange things on this copy or add any new
files to it, since it's never possible to tell whether the Trojan Horse is
still lurking out there somewhere.
I hope GEOS 128 v2 owners will find this helpful. I've been having a good time
experimenting with my "upgrade," and I'm convinced that this is the program BSW
should have marketed in the first place.

Thanks for the info. I think our members *will* find it useful!

Marte,
I had noticed a game package advertised under the name "Renegade" and wondered
what was going to happen about that. I have the "Renegade" package but since I
got it before the release of GEOS128 V2.0, I wondered how well it would work.
I guess I should get with it and order my GEOS128 upgrade.

Bill, check the "GEOS toolkit" module. It may be that it will copy it even
though it was released before the "official" release of 2.0.
I think the upgrade is the program GEOS should have been from the very
beginning, and I'm glad they've finally produced it!

Marte,
I agree that 2.0 is "the way it should have been." Yhere's still a few
enhancements I'd like to see, though, mainly relating to the 1581.
1) Enhanced directory support: Since a GEOS 1541 disk only has room for 18
pages (or 144 files), that's all the support that's built into the desktop.
There's room for lots more files on a 1581, but no way to access them from
GEOS.
2) Subdirectory support. The 1581 drive supports partitioning of the disk into
subdirectories, somewhat like MS-DOS. There's no way to access files in a
subdirectory from GEOS.
3) And, of course, copy protection.

I'd also like to see an end to the inane assumption that people using GEOS 128
are using 1541s as their main drives. While this version (thank goodness!)
didn't require a reconfiguration to a 1541 to install properly, there was a lot
of unnecessary trouble caused by that assumption with geoWrite Workshop 128.
It shouldn't matter *which* drive you're using.
The copy protection is a continuing nuisance. I bet if they'd gone to
unprotected Commodore GEOS like they did with Apple GEOS, they would never have
had to discontinue phone support. I'd be willing to bet money that 90% of all
customer support calls had to do with damaged or mis-keyed disks arising
directly from their nitwit protection scheme. Why they couldn't have the
maturity to admit they blew it big time, and DROP the protection, is beyond my
comprehension.
I really like the "delete page" option. Before, if you removed all the files
from a page, you were stuck with a blank page on your disk (although there was
a public domain program that would delete them for you).
OH! Did I mention that there is no CONVERT program anywhere on the disks???
That's unbelievable. Considering the fact that their "aftermarket" CONVERT
programs (as found on Q) are *known* to be duds, how on earth are people
supposed to get one that works? And what about people who subscribe to *other*
networks and want to upload and download GEOS stuff? That's got to be one of
the major bonehead moves of all time.

Marte,
As long as they maintain support for people who *do* use a 1541 for
intalling, I think giving some options would be a good idea.
I like the add and delete page functions, too. I'd like to see a directory
sort option, too, especially for my font library.
I'm surprised they're not distributing CONVERT on the 128 disks. It does
seem foolish, considering that the ones that are on most networks are 64-only.

Ed,
Since I don't have my GEOS128 V2.0 yet, I am just playing by ear!!!
I seem to remember someone (here on CIS) saying you could select files for
running from other than icon view. If so, VIEW by NAME sorts Alphabetically
and if you could use multi-file to copy to another disk.......(Maybe it would
work??). Then again multi-file may not work unless viewing is by icon.

That's pretty good for someone who hasn't even seen the product yet! <grin>
Yepper, in GEOS 128 2.0, all the different file manipulations can be done
from the various VIEW submenus. You can fast double-click to run, slow
double-click for a ghost icon, or use the C= key plus number keys to build a
chain of multi-files. You can then process them with any of the other keyboard
shortcuts. Among the exciting new keyboard shortcuts are CTRL-A and CTRL-B for
copying selected file(s) to drive A and B, respectively.
See 1ST128.TXT in LIB 13 for the results of my "first look" at GEOS 128 2.0.

Bill, I used "Renegade," which has now been re-named "Maverick." It worked
like a charm. That's one of the most comprehensive copy programs I've ever
seen. The only thing that gets me about it is that you start most of the copy
processes by pressing the space bar, and my space bar is dead, dead, dead.
<sigh> Oh well, the kids let me use the 64 once in a while if they think I've
been a good Mom. :)

I was able to install GEOS 128 2.0 with no problems, then make bootable backups
with GEOSBUSTERS. BTW, does anyone know the structure of the GEOSBUSTER modules
so that I could write one of my own? I hacked GEODEX into a CD cataloger by
hand, but wonder if I could make the process into an automatic GEOSBUSTER
module. Tony

I wonder if there is an alternative keypress combination for the SPACE bar that
would help you. Maybe some CTRL key combo, or a joystick combo? Might be worth
playing around. Tony

I fiddled around with everything I could think of, but Ed gave me the solution
I needed. I cut a space out of another document and pasted it in where I
needed it. It gets pretty tedious, but it works. I still don't understand why
the INSERT key is disabled in GEOS, though <sigh>
